IFPHK and YF Life Trustee launched the 2026 Hong Kong–Macau Retirement Expense Index in August. Building on IFPHK’s retirement-expense tracking since 2020, the expanded study now provides a regional benchmark covering both Hong Kong and Macau. In Hong Kong, the Index rose to 131.6, while retirees’ average monthly expenditure reached about HK$15,090. In Macau, the new baseline Index was set at 100, with average monthly retiree expenditure at about MOP10,400.

The Institute of Financial Planners of Hong Kong (IFPHK), in collaboration with YF Life Trustees Ltd. (YF Life Trustees), today launched the "IFPHK x YF Life: Hong Kong–Macau Retirement Expense Index" (Index). The Index rose to 131.6 in 2026, up from 127.0 in 2023 and 100 in 2020, while average monthly spending increased to about HK$15,090 in 2026. On an annualised basis, the Hong Kong Retirement Expense Index grew by more than 5% per annum from November 2020 to May 2026.

Macau’s Index establishes 2026 as the baseline year with an index value of 100, laying a vital foundation for future year-on-year tracking of retirement living costs in the city.

Since 2020, the Index has been the only long-term, retirement-specific benchmark tracking retirees’ actual living expenses. As the first study of its kind by IFPHK, the Index tracks and measures long-term changes in retirees’ actual living expenses with reference to the Composite Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the expenditure weightings published by the Government.
